Al Kelly Mór is the exuberant, enthusiastic and tireless PR for the Malahide Rugby Club. I caught up with him recently to find out all about where he has come from and why we should take the short journey to the beautiful Malahide Estuary to visit the Rugby Club.

Al Kelly Mór : Where the Name Comes From

This did intrigue me - those of you who've met Al will know that not only is he a true gentleman, he's also a tall one... turns out that it wasn't anything to do with his height, rather to do with his lineage. Al is decended from Taidgh Mór O'Kelly - one of the most colourful high kings of Ireland.

Malahide Rugby Club : How Did He End Up There?

Al is a graduate of the Shannon Hotel School and spent years travelling the world working in such exotic places as San Mauritz, Claridges in London, Zurich, Jamaica, the Bahamas, the Beverly Wiltshire in LA and Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. He came home to Ireland in the 70's and was director of sales for the Interncontinental Hotel Group until they were taken over by Jury's. He then opened a "boutique" hotel in Malahide, where he settled for a good few years. It was through the hotel that Al got involved with the Rugby Club who were then based in the grounds of Malahide Castle. Al became involved with the club, ending up as president.

What's So Great About Malahide Rugby Club?

You can't help but get enthused when Al starts talking about his baby, the new Malahide Rugby Club facilities. Al was president when the state of art building was proposed and planned, and now works on a voluntary basis to help to fund the running of the clubhouse. I'm not much of a sports person myself, so Al explained why the club needs to have revenue coming in. "The club is community based, aside from the official rugby team, the local community can use the facilities as well, particularly during the Summer months" said Al. But since we weren't there to talk about men in shorts (no matter how interesting that might be!) Al quickly moved on enthuse more about the Malahide Rugby Club as a venue for corporate entertainment and conferences.

Unique Sporting Location Where There's a Very Warm Welcome

Al describes the Malahide Rugby Club as a unique sporting location where there's a very warm welcome. He'd love to see company days out, product launches, conferences and all sorts of corporate entertainment take place in club house. They've invested heavily to design and build a beautiful club house, with full kitchens and audio visual facilities that can cater for up to 140 in a sit down setting.

The Malahide Rugby Club are very proud that the International Rugby Board have already held a conference in the facilities, and is keen to emhasise that it's a fantastic venue, only 15 minutes from the airport! I love the triangular room and the Rugby Bar (see below). And I have to say I just love Al's enthusiasm and the gusto with which he evangelises about the Club. If you're looking for somewhere that little bit different for your events, you could do a lot worse than check out the Malahide Rugby Club. Contact the club manager on 01 8400026 or email: clubmanager@malahiderfc.ie. And enjoy!
