NEO Ireland : the Network for Event Organisers in Ireland
Welcome!

January blew in with a massive flurry of activity for us here in Dun Laoghaire - we co-hosted the Events Industry Skillnet session on January 15th, and welcomed Gráinne into the office. Sarah talked with Ellen Gunning on the new Events Radio Program on Dublin City FM, in between working hard on how we go forward with NEO Ireland and trying to get her voice back after flu'. We're really looking forward to the changes that will come on stream in the LUNAR New Year (7th of February, year of the Rat). We've also got a couple of diary dates for you and a report on the first NEO Ireland Annual Debate - Are You Crackers? Read on!

The Events Industry Skillnet
Events Industry Skillnet : Sarah's Update and Please Help!

The Events Industry Skillnet has been in operation officially since the 2nd of January - we've delivered quite a few days of training already, and want to deliver more! I have the honour of being the Chairperson of the Steering Group and we really want to use the grant aid in the best way possible.

We have put up a list of the courses and topics that we put together from all the feedback in the Summer - but we'd really like a little more detail to help us to refine the programme. So if you would - please - head on over to the website and let us know how we can help you. We loved the feedback we got from Terry Harmer's first course - and we've all been going around using what we learned for weeks now! Look out world - we're here to sell to you (but only so long as you actually want to buy!)

NEO NEO! Plus ca Change and all that...

I arrived in Ireland in early November full of ideas for what a network for event organisers ought to be doing, inspired by the NEO Ireland website and all the activity that is recorded there. Reality, of course, is different, but I'm still inspired! I've had the opportunity to meet many of our members and to really review all the background, hopes and aspirations that have poured on to past feedback forms (sorry, Happy Sheets!).
We've now had the opportunity to review what NEO Ireland should be and where we can do better, particularly in the light of the launch of the Events Industry Skillnet. So early in the Lunar New Year (very soon after the 7th of February) we will be launching the new, updated NEO website, and our new methods of interacting with you. We hope you like - and that you'll tell us if not!

Date for Your Diary: 30th April 2008 - Events Day 08
We thought about not having an Events Day this year, but some people were very upset about the idea... Apparently, we have such great speakers and exhibitors have done some really good business... so we're planning for Wednesday April 30th - Venue is still being confirmed, but put the date in your diary. If you'd like to listen to the podcasts from Events Day 07, and indeed from our 5th P in Event Marketing, please click here. Thanks again to Joanne Ballesty and team at Pictaural for producing these for us. We love the online podcaster!

Date for Your Diary: Every Tuesday at 1.30 pm

You may know of Ellen Gunning, Director of the Irish Academy of Public Relations - also a Director of Dublin City FM. If you don't - then get to know her! Ellen launched Mediascope on Dublin City FM. The programme is going out every Tuesday at 1.30 pm and Ellen would be delighted to hear your news. Contact her: info_at_irishacademy.com

Date for Your Diary: Friday 1st of February

The Institute of Art, Design and Technology at Dun Laoghaire have been running a really succesful Arts/Cultural events management course for the past while. This Friday they have a Masterclass that they are happy to open to the NEO community. Well worth heading over to, this Masterclass will be presented by Rob Harris and Johnny Allen.

Johnny Allen is the Director for the Centre of Event Management at the University of Technology Sydney. He has had an extensive career in event planning, staging and management. Prior to his current position he was the Special Events Manager for Tourism New South Wales.

Rob is a senior lecturer and director for continuing professional education at the University of Technology, Sydney. He has been involved in event management, training and research for several years and has developed programmes in event management at postgraduate and undergraduate levels.

Are You Crackers? Event Managers are Made and Not Born

On December 10th, we rolled up our sleeves, donned our Santa hats and went down to the Vaults, IFSC to debate whether or not there is a need for degree courses in events management.

The speakers were Des Doris (Alchemy Events) and our very own Sarah Carroll (Eventznet, NEO Ireland, C4EE). Des defended the view that events managers are born to their profession, arguing that what you can't teach someone about events management in one year, you can't teach them in three, while Sarah argued that degree-level education lends the professional standards and recognition crucial to an industry where many work out of love for their job.

Moderator of the debate was Clyde Carroll (Chambers Ireland), who did an excellent job in allowing everyone to get their say while also keeping the combatants from getting physical with each other. The debate reached a pulse-raising crescendo when Des remarked that events management could hardly be compared to open heart surgery. This provoked a heated response from several members of the audience, who pointed to the high-risk elements involved in certain types of events, stressing the need for thorough knowledge in such matters as site safety, insurance and legal issues and stating that though events managers may not be surgeons, they do from time to time hold peoples' lives in their hands.

Finally, Clyde put a stop to the debate and a show of hands proved Sarah to be the winner by three votes. The winner was awarded a bottle of champagne and, in the spirit of Christmas and goodwill, so was the runner-up. Then every member of the audience received a beautiful silvery Christmas tree decoration in the shape of a snowflake, donated by Mace Promotions.

Passionate contributions from the floor came from Marie Griffin of Event Management International and all the way from Leeds Metropolitan University especially for the debate, Nicola McCollough and Sharon McElhinney amongst others!

The prizes for most accurate guess as to the number of students currently in DIT's degree course in events management went to Maria Roddy of Dundalk IT, who received a lovely floral arrangement from Floral Expressions (though not actually then and there, since it and its creator unfortunately had gotten stuck in traffic), and Peter Lawless of 3R Sales and Marketing, who received a chocolate Christmas tree.

Once the winners were declared and the prizes awarded, we trooped out to fortify ourselves with mulled wine and some gorgeous party food provided by the Vaults, and to continue our debating unmoderated.

Thanks to the team: Sarah, Sigrid, Conor, Fern and Cathal, and to Marian Fenton, Fiona Cronin and Lisa O’Shea, our Invaluable Assistants.

A great big thanks to our sponsors Eventznet.ie, SUMO Multimedia, The Vaults, Hire All Party & Event Hire, and to our contributors Sláinte Stillorgan, Mace Promotions and Floral Expressions – we couldn’t have done it without you!
