We've set out the changes introduced by the Finance Act 2007 in respect of the entitlement to deduct input VAT incurred on attendance at certain business conferences with effect from 1 July 2007.

Prior to the enactment of the new provisions a taxable person could not claim a deduction for VAT incurred on costs for accommodation even where such expenditure was incurred in the course or furtherance of business. The new provisions allow a taxable person to deduct VAT incurred on accommodation in connection with the attendance by him or her or by his or her representative at a ‘qualifying conference’ as defined. A deduction may be made where the accommodation is provided at the conference venue or at a different location.

The entitlement to deduct input VAT relates solely to VAT incurred on costs of accommodation and does not include VAT incurred on expenditure on food or drink. In accordance with normal VAT rules, deductibility is allowed only where expenditure is incurred which is attributable to taxable supplies by a business.

CALL FOR SPEAKERS The IIA is running another in its Internet Debate Series on 5th September in Dublin city centre. If you are passionate about Blogging, either for or against, and if you fancy taking part please contact them. Active, intelligent and vocal participation will be encouraged. The debate starts at 6.30pm and speakers and attendees can socialise over a drink after the battles have been won or lost!

Debate Format: There will be 5 minutes for each speaker and a 3 minute rebuttal. The team captain will have 2 minutes to wrap up each team’s argument. This will bring the talk time to just over 1 hour and the motion will then be opened to the floor. There will be a time keeper on hand and a warning bell will be given when 30 seconds remain for each speaker’s slot. The debate will be followed by networking drinks.
